Tbilisi Landscape Modeling Workshop

Tbilisi Landscape Modeling Workshop

Ubani is announcing an open call to participate in the Landscape Modeling Workshop. The workshop, led by Italian architect and scholar Renato Rizzi, seeks to create a landscape model of Tbilisi. The event is organized in collaboration with the team from IUAV University of Venice — Susanna Pisciella and Giorgia Antonioli.
Tbilisi Landscape Modeling Workshop

Rizzi's approach to landscape modeling is deeply rooted in phenomenology and metaphysics. His models are not mere design tools but are considered “thinking devices” that facilitate a deeper understanding of space and its inherent meanings.

The workshop involves observing, studying, and creating models of various scales of the Tbilisi landscape. The final exhibition will be held at the TBC Concept exhibition space.

Structure

Renato Rizzi and his assistants will lead the seminar. The seminar is divided into two parts:

  • 1 - September 10 - Tbilisi Orthogonal model.
  • 11 - September 21 - Metekhi Cliff Panoramic model.

Selected participants will choose which model creation activity they want to participate in. They will then be divided into groups to create models. Each group will be guided by an assistant instructor who will help them through each stage.

What You’ll Gain

A Deepened Way of Seeing: Engaging directly with Renato Rizzi, you’ll learn to perceive architecture not as “design” or “style” but as a manifestation of invisible forces—cultural, temporal, and spiritual. Modelmaking becomes a tool for seeing beyond surfaces.

Embodied Thinking: Rizzi’s approach will teach you that your hands think. Through craft—cutting, casting, and layering, you engage in a nonverbal form of reasoning. Making a model becomes a way to philosophise in three dimensions.

Respect for Slowness and Silence: In a world of instant rendering and digital speed, you’ll experience the value of slowness. Rizzi encourages patience, contemplation, and inner listening, crucial for developing sensitivity in your practice.

Craft as Ethics: You will understand craft not as skill but as ethics—a responsibility to care for materials, spaces, and the stories they hold.

A Unique Portfolio: Working with plaster and raw materials will distinguish your work. You’ll build a portfolio of tactile, conceptually rich models.

Mentorship in Architectural Thought: Rizzi is not just a professor but a mentor in architectural thinking. It can transform your understanding of architecture if you’re open to this.

Certificate: Receive a certificate from Ubani - Tbilisi Cityscape Research Center.
